Certificate description

BPI Certified Compostable Resin — Torise

For film converters and packaging manufacturers supplying the US market: In North America, BPI certification is the working compliance baseline for compostable packaging.

Major retailers, US state procurement programs (California, Washington, Oregon), and commercial composting facilities use the BPI mark as their acceptance filter — without it, products are typically rejected regardless of biobased content claims.

Torise holds BPI resin certification for our compostable resin grades (Natural, Red, Yellow, White, Black, Green), tested against ASTM D6400 — the US standard for plastics designed to compost in municipal and industrial composting facilities.

Why ASTM D6400 — and What It Requires

ASTM D6400 requires that materials achieve at least 90% biodegradation (conversion to CO₂) within 180 days under industrial composting conditions, with no ecotoxicity in the resulting compost. Each product is certified only up to the tested thickness — a product reformulated to be thicker than its certified version is no longer covered.

BPI certification is valid for three years and involves independent laboratory testing, application review, and ongoing market surveillance. The full certification process typically takes several months from application to certified product.

Requirement ASTM D6400 Specification
Biodegradation rate ≥90% conversion to CO₂ within 180 days
Disintegration ≤10% material remaining on 2mm sieve
Ecotoxicity No toxic residue — plant growth ≥90% of control
Heavy metals Limits on As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Zn
PFAS No intentionally added PFAS — state-level restrictions apply
